Showing in Open Houses
My starting point is the wood itself. Sometimes its shape or texture will immediately suggest the final piece, or I move pieces around to surprise myself. I try not to have too much control – it’s often a balance between the considered and the accidental. The surface of the wood may suggest thick or more transparent paint. The nails, tacks or whatever else I can find, act to “stitch” together the composition. Edges are important – working with wood makes an object as well as a surface. The smaller they are, the more sculptural.
