Stuart Gadd

I make unique hand built ceramic pieces that can be used as functional vessels or as objects of beauty. I use a variety of glazes, oxides, slips and textures to transform the clay, often giving it the appearance of another material. I like to use the contrast of the firing between slips and glazes and use this as a feature for many of my pieces. I am fascinated by shape and form. I love to work the clay to its limits and produce pieces that have shapes that change as the viewer looks at them. I particularly like starting with one shape and then twisting and stretching it thus transforming it to a different shape, whilst maintaining an element of the original piece. Some of my work is closed using fastenings such as zips or buttons, some are sewn whilst other pieces are bolted together. I aim to use shape, colour, texture and fastenings to make truly original work.
